Can you believe it wasn’t till our fourth baby that I was given permission to take some down time post-partum?!?
Our culture expects moms to be right back to “normal” after labor. After my our first daughter was born at the hospital, I was encouraged to get up and walk around as much as I could right away. After our second, I didn’t really have a choice about not slowing down – though each time I was blessed to have my mom come and help with the big kids.
After my third birth (our fourth child) in a birthing center I was made to promise to rest for three days. I cannot explain the relief I felt being given the permission to rest.
That made all the difference. To not feel like I was being lazy by resting, by napping when baby was sleeping, by “taking it easy”.
By taking care of myself I am setting myself up to be a better mom.
How patient are you when you are worn out? I know I’m not. I get overwhelmed by the chaos that is children. Every little noise that is just slightly too loud grates me down. But when I’m at my best, those roll right over me.
So take those extra moments to make sure your bucket is filled so you can pour into those little joys.
Even if you are a seasoned parent, having a new baby can throw you for some loops. Remember to question the advice given to you and follow your gut! Here are a few nuggets to keep in mind in those first months of new baby land.
